A Free-to-Play Combat Leveling Guide for Adventurers (RS3)

Greetings, fellow scapers! 🪓⚔️ Whether you’re fresh off Tutorial Island or dusting off an old account, training combat in free-to-play can feel like a grind. But don’t worry — I’ve got your back with a tried-and-true leveling path that takes you from slapping cows in Lumbridge to battling ice warriors like a seasoned adventurer. Let’s dive in!

🍼 Levels 1–10: Humble Beginnings in Birth and Lumbridge

You’ll start out in Burthorpe (Birth), where the trolls roam nearby. These are a bit chunky for total beginners, so mix in some training on cows just south of Lumbridge. Cows have low defense, drop cowhides (good early cash if you sell them on the Grand Exchange), and make you feel like a true adventurer earning their stripes.

Tip: Pick up bones and bury them for a little Prayer XP along the way.

💀 Levels 10–20: Lumbridge Catacombs

Once you’re feeling stronger, it’s time to dive into the Lumbridge Catacombs. You’ll need to complete the short quest The Blood Pact to gain access — a solid intro to combat and well worth the 5 minutes it takes.

Here you’ll find a variety of low-level monsters like zombies and skeletons. The Catacombs are great because everything’s aggressive, so you’ll spend less time chasing and more time training.

🐀 Levels 20–30: Varrock Sewers

Next stop: Varrock Sewers. Enter through the manhole near the east bank (you’ll feel like a real rogue sneaking down there). Inside you’ll meet deadly foes like giant rats, zombies, and scorpions. Perfect for leveling while feeling like you’re in the underbelly of Varrock’s secret world.

Bring some food — the deeper you go, the tougher the critters get.

👹 Levels 30–40: Hill Giants

Once you’ve grown stronger, it’s time for one of the most iconic training spots: Hill Giants. To access their lair, you’ll need a Brass Key (buyable on the GE or lootable in-game). Hill Giants are an F2P classic — decent XP, and they drop big bones (excellent Prayer training if you’re saving them up).

This is where you’ll start to feel like a real combatant.

❄️ Levels 40–60: Ice Warriors and Ice Giants

Time to test your mettle in the chill of the wilderness (literally). Head over to the dungeon under White Wolf Mountain or the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon to face Ice Warriors and Ice Giants. These monsters are tougher, hit harder, and give solid XP.

They’re also a great spot to practice safespotting if you’re ranging or maging.

Pro tip: Bring plenty of food and a teleport just in case things get frosty.

🏆 Beyond 60: Choose Your Path

By now, you’re battle-hardened. At this point you can:

  • Keep grinding Ice Warriors for XP.

  • Take on Moss Giants in the Varrock Sewers or Crandor for variety.

  • Mix in some PvP fun if you’re feeling brave — F2P wildy fights can spice things up!

Final Thoughts

Combat leveling in free-to-play is all about steady progress and finding training spots that suit your level. From humble cows to icy warriors, every step makes your character stronger and your story richer.

So grab your steel scimitar, pack some lobsters, and get training. Who knows — maybe I’ll bump into you in the sewers or chilling with the giants. Until then… happy scaping! 🧙‍♂️
